Louisville Lyft Driver Charged with Sodomy, Kidnapping; Federal Immigration Detainer Issued

Louisville, Kentucky — A 34-year-old Lyft driver accused of sexually assaulting a female passenger during a ride to a medical appointment is now also the subject of a federal immigration detainer, according to police records.

Yordan Diaz Vera, of Louisville, is charged with first-degree sodomy, kidnapping and menacing, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Authorities confirmed that Diaz Vera also has a U.S. immigration detainer, indicating federal officials believe he may be subject to removal proceedings. The Department of Homeland Security has not publicly confirmed his immigration status.

Allegations During Doctor’s Appointment Ride

According to an incident report, the alleged assault occurred on Feb. 4 after the victim’s doctor’s office arranged a Lyft ride to transport her to an appointment.

Police say that after picking up the passenger, Diaz Vera allegedly opened the glove compartment, revealing a firearm. Investigators say he then pulled over, exited the driver’s seat and moved into the backseat with the victim.

The woman reportedly attempted to escape but told officers she could not open the door because it was locked.

Authorities allege that once in the backseat, Diaz Vera forced the victim into sexual acts.

After being dropped off at the medical office, the victim was able to contact police.

Arrest and Investigation

LMPD officials said Diaz Vera was taken into custody shortly after the report was made.

“The subject was taken into custody quickly due to the prompt reporting and timely investigative actions by the LMPD SVU Office of Sexual and Physical Investigations,” the department said in a statement.

Police added that there is currently no evidence suggesting the incident is part of a broader pattern of related crimes.

Lyft Responds

A spokesperson for Lyft confirmed that Diaz Vera has been permanently removed from the platform.

“The behavior described is reprehensible and has no place in the Lyft community or society,” the company said, adding that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement.

Lyft noted that drivers must meet specific requirements to operate on the platform, including holding a valid driver’s license and Social Security number.

Immigration Detainer Explained

An immigration detainer is typically issued when federal authorities request that a local jail hold an individual beyond their scheduled release time so Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can take custody.

At this time, federal officials have not publicly clarified whether removal proceedings have begun.

Diaz Vera remains charged under Kentucky law, and the criminal case is ongoing.

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, resources are available through local law enforcement agencies and national support organizations.
