Beech Grove Police Officer Killed Near Indianapolis; Suspect in Custody After Blue Alert

A police officer was shot and killed Monday evening near Indianapolis while responding to a disturbance call, according to Indiana State Police. A suspect has since been taken into custody.

Authorities said Beech Grove Police Officer Brian Elliott was shot just after 6 p.m. on the 100 block of Diplomat Court in Beech Grove, a community southeast of downtown Indianapolis.

Officer Shot While Responding to Disturbance

According to officials, Officer Elliott responded to reports of a disturbance in the neighborhood. During the incident, both Elliott and another officer were shot. The suspect fled the scene following the shooting.

Officer Elliott later died from his injuries. The second officer was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that today we lost one of our very own, Officer Brian Elliott,” Beech Grove Police Chief Michael Maurice said in a statement.

Suspect Identified and Arrested

Authorities identified the suspect as 47-year-old Kenneth Johnson. After fleeing the scene, a Blue Alert was issued to help locate and apprehend him.

An Indiana State Police SWAT team later took Johnson into custody Monday night. Officials have not yet released additional details regarding potential charges.

Community and Law Enforcement Response

Chief Maurice expressed condolences to Elliott’s family and thanked emergency responders for their efforts.

“My heart goes out to Brian’s wife, Erin, his parents, and all of his family, friends, and loved ones. At this time, I am asking that we lean on one another to get through this. We are grateful to the team at Eskenazi Hospital, and our law enforcement and community partners for their extraordinary response and support,” Maurice said.

Law enforcement agencies across the region assisted in the response and subsequent search for the suspect.

Ongoing Investigation

Indiana State Police are leading the investigation into the shooting. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact Indiana State Police at 317-899-8577.

Further details about the circumstances surrounding the disturbance call and shooting have not yet been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
