by Gunnison, Colorado – A small Colorado community is mourning the loss of a 7-year-old boy who died in a tragic dog attack inside his own home, as neighbors raise more than $125,000 to support his grieving mother.
Authorities confirmed that Leelan Swift, 7, died on Feb. 4 after being attacked by a dog at his residence in Gunnison, located about 150 miles south of Aspen.
City officials said officers responded quickly after receiving reports of the attack, but despite emergency efforts, the child did not survive.
“This was a tragic incident that has been extremely difficult for the family, first responders and our community as a whole,” City Manager Amanda Wilson said.
Officers Forced to Take Immediate Action
According to officials, two local officers arrived on the scene and encountered the dog actively attacking the child.
“One of our officers was in the position of needing to discharge their firearm, a single shot to stop the dog that was interfacing with a child,” Wilson said.
Authorities confirmed the shot killed the dog but did not injure the child. While one officer eliminated the threat, the other began performing life-saving measures until additional first responders arrived.
Despite those efforts, Leelan was pronounced dead.
“The loss of a child in his home is a deeply private matter and the details are difficult to communicate and even harder to hear,” Wilson added.
Community Support for Grieving Mother
In the wake of the tragedy, Gunnison residents have rallied around Kirsten “Kirky” Swift, Leelan’s mother, who is raising him and his older brother as a single parent.
A family friend launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and assist the family with relocating to a new home.
As of Feb. 12, the fundraiser has generated more than $125,000, with nearly all donations coming from local residents.
“Anyone who knows Kirky knows how deeply she cares for others — now is our chance to return that kindness,” organizer Scott Cline wrote on the fundraising page.
The overwhelming financial support reflects the tight-knit nature of the Gunnison community and the impact Leelan’s death has had on neighbors, classmates, and first responders alike.

Investigation Continues
Police say the incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not released details about the dog involved or its ownership status.
Officials also declined to discuss whether the animal had any prior history of aggression.
Law enforcement emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and additional information may be released as it becomes available.
A Community in Mourning
Leelan’s death has deeply shaken Gunnison, where many residents know each other personally. City leaders described the tragedy as one that has affected not only the family but also emergency responders and the broader community.
