Hollywood, Florida — A 28-year-old man already jailed on violent felony charges is now facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found on Hollywood Beach late last year, court records show.
Prosecutors have indicated they are seeking the death penalty against Brandon Ward McCray, escalating a case that began with charges of sexual battery and kidnapping before authorities linked him to the woman’s death.
Woman found dead on beach sparks homicide investigation
According to the Hollywood Police Department, a passerby discovered the body of 56-year-old Heather Asendorf on the sand near Cleveland Street around 7 a.m. on December 26.
First responders pronounced Asendorf dead at the scene. Detectives later determined her death was the result of foul play, prompting a homicide investigation.
Investigators concluded the circumstances surrounding the death were suspicious and criminal in nature, police said
Authorities noted that Asendorf was a Pennsylvania resident who was known to frequent the Hollywood Beach area.
Suspect already jailed on violent felony charges
Court records show McCray was taken into custody earlier this year, on January 5, following a separate arrest tied to a violent incident in the same area.
At the time of that arrest, McCray faced the following charges:
- Sexual battery
- Kidnapping
- Battery
- Battery by strangulation
On Tuesday, prosecutors formally upgraded the case, charging McCray with first-degree murder in connection with Asendorf’s death.
The state is now pursuing the death penalty, according to court filings reviewed by Local 10 News
Arrest involved multiple agencies
McCray was arrested at his residence in the 1200 block of North 17th Court in Hollywood during a joint operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service and local police.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed what evidence directly connects McCray to Asendorf’s death. His arrest warrant was listed as sealed on the Broward Clerk of Courts website, limiting access to investigative details.

Case raises safety concerns along beach area
The killing has raised renewed concerns about public safety along Hollywood Beach, a popular area for both locals and tourists, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.
The discovery of a homicide victim on the beach has intensified calls for increased patrols and awareness, especially during the holiday season
Police have not indicated whether additional suspects are being sought or whether the murder was random or targeted.
Investigation continues
Authorities say the investigation remains active, and more details may be released as the case moves forward through the court system.
Prosecutors are expected to outline their case in upcoming hearings as they pursue the most severe penalty available under Florida law.
For now, the focus remains on accountability for the death of Heather Asendorf, whose killing shocked the Hollywood Beach community.
