The university shared the news in a statement posted on Facebook shortly after the accident, calling Cook’s passing “devastating.”

“We are grieved to share the news that one of our students, Payton Cook, passed away tonight in a car accident. This is devastating news for all of us and, most importantly, for his personal family,” the statement said. “Our hearts and prayers go out to all members of the Cook family.”

Tusculum noted that the loss is especially painful for the men’s lacrosse program, where Cook was a freshman teammate and a business administration major from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada.

“We know they are grieving, and we grieve with them,” the statement added.

Crash Details Released by Local Officials

According to local reports, the accident occurred in Tusculum when the Honda Pilot carrying the students veered off the roadway during a left-hand turn and crashed into a tree. Cook was sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the collision.

Tennessee station WJHL reported that the four injured students were treated and discharged within two days of the crash.

Campus Leaders Offer Support to Students

The university activated counseling and support services immediately after the tragedy, involving the Office of Student Affairs and the Rev. E.J. Swatsell, who serves as director of spiritual life and special projects.

In a statement to WBIR, Tusculum University president Scott Hummel said:

“Payton’s passing has impacted his family immensely, and it has left a big hole in the hearts of everyone at Tusculum. Our desire is for this service to provide a measure of comfort to his family and to help our students, faculty and staff cope with this loss of life.”

Memorial Held at Pioneer Arena

Tusculum University hosted a memorial service for Cook on Monday, December 8, at Pioneer Arena. Students, staff, families, and members of the lacrosse community gathered to honor his memory.

Friend and fellow lacrosse player Caleb Mimms traveled from nearby Emory & Henry University to attend.

“It’s all a family. I can’t imagine what the Tusculum men’s lacrosse program is going through right now,” Mimms told WBIR.

A moment of silence also took place before Saturday’s men’s basketball game, with another scheduled ahead of Wednesday’s women’s game.

Students Share Memories of Cook

One of the injured students, Jordan York, attended the memorial and offered emotional remarks about Cook, affectionately known as “Cookie.”

“If you ever got the chance to talk to him, you are very lucky,” York shared. “People like him don’t come around often, and knowing him was one of the greatest gifts of my life.”

He added:

“Cookie, if you’re listening, keep watching over us. I love you, bro.”

While final exams will continue as scheduled, the university stated that it will provide accommodations for students impacted by the tragedy, ensuring they have the support and flexibility needed during a difficult time.
