North Carolina Man Arrested after Allegedly Setting Rubbing Alcohol on Fire During Domestic Dispute; Woman Escaped Physical Harm Attempt

Sylva, North Carolina — A North Carolina man has been arrested after allegedly spraying rubbing alcohol on a woman, furniture, and the floor before setting it on fire in a frightening domestic incident, authorities say. The attack left the victim’s clothing scorched but did not result in physical injury.

Incident Details

The incident occurred at a residence on Chipper Curve Road in Sylva, approximately one hour west of Asheville, on Friday, November 21, just after 7 a.m. According to the Sylva Police Department, officers responded to a domestic dispute call and discovered the aftermath of the dangerous encounter.

During the verbal altercation, 56-year-old Patrick Tyson allegedly grabbed a bottle of rubbing alcohol and poured it on the floor and couch, where the victim was sitting, before igniting it with a cigarette lighter. The fire caused the woman’s shirt to catch fire, as well as damage to the carpet and couch. Tyson also allegedly damaged a stove during the incident.

Assistant Police Chief Robbie Carter told PEOPLE, “He sprayed it, and it went on the carpet, the couch and on her.” The victim reportedly said that Tyson threatened her, claiming he would set her on fire if she didn’t get him a beer, before igniting the blaze.

Charges and Arrest

Tyson was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including:

  • Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill
  • First-Degree Arson
  • Misdemeanor Assault on a Female
  • Misdemeanor Injury to Personal Property

He is currently being held at the Jackson County Jail on a $750,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in District Court on December 1.
