Veteran’s Quick Action Saves the Day
Authorities reported that George Karkoc confronted the unclothed suspect around 7 a.m. last Friday after hearing the tenant screaming for help. Despite sustaining two broken legs and a shattered hip, Karkoc bravely faced the intruder outside the residence, according to the Los Angeles Police Department and multiple media outlets.
“I knew that if I didn’t take care of him, I had no clue what he was gonna do or was capable of doing,” Karkoc told FOX 11 Los Angeles from his hospital bed at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills.
Disturbing Footage of Intruder
Surveillance cameras captured the nude suspect wandering the neighborhood, screaming and tearing down lawn signs, before allegedly attempting the home invasion. Karkoc reported that he initially tried to warn the trespasser, telling him he was armed and had called the police, and asked him to leave.
“He jumps on top of me and forces me down. I couldn’t handle the weight. He had his legs wrapped around me somehow, and his arms, I couldn’t move and all that weight, I just collapsed with him on top of me,” Karkoc told NBC 4 Los Angeles, describing the violent struggle.
Confrontation Ends in Fatal Shooting
During the altercation, Karkoc managed to retrieve his gun and shot the intruder in the chest and then in the head, police confirmed. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
“I wasn’t thinking about myself,” Karkoc told CBS News. “I was thinking about taking care of the problem. After 28 years of not using [my gun], I didn’t think I’d have to, but that’s why I had it, because you never know.”
Recovery and Community Praise
Karkoc was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, and family members say he faces a long and painful recovery, according to a GoFundMe set up to assist him.
Neighbors and local residents are hailing Karkoc as a hero, and the Los Angeles Police Department visited him in the hospital on Veterans Day to show their respect. Despite the attention, Karkoc remains humble.
“I kind of disregard it, but I don’t consider myself a hero,” he told FOX 11. “You know, it’s a situation where I was fortunate enough to do the right thing. I’m just thankful that I’m alive, and that the situation got taken care of.”
