New York City — A powerful polar vortex is set to hit the East Coast, bringing bone-chilling temperatures and a premature taste of winter to New York City this weekend. Forecasters say this surge of arctic air will affect over 100 million people from the Northeast to the Florida panhandle.
Polar Vortex Arrives Early
Meteorologists attribute the extreme cold to the convergence of two major weather systems: La Niña and an easterly Quasi-Biennial Oscillation. These systems are funneling frigid air from Canada into the region beginning Sunday, bringing the potential for freezing temperatures, wind chills, and early snowfall.
According to FOX Weather Meteorologist Dylan DeBruyn, “On Sunday and Monday, a large dip in the jet stream will move into the eastern half of the U.S. as a low-pressure system pivots into the Great Lakes.” This pattern will usher in northwest winds that push temperatures well below average, with afternoon highs 10 to 25 degrees lower than normal and overnight lows dipping below freezing for millions of residents.
NYC Temperature Plunge
In New York City, Sunday will feel relatively mild, with temperatures near 60 degrees, but by Monday, the full impact of the polar vortex arrives. Temperatures are expected to peak around midnight before falling into the 40s by afternoon and dropping further to the mid-to-upper 30s by early Tuesday morning.
With winds gusting over 30 mph, wind chill values could fall as low as 25 degrees, according to DeBruyn. Interestingly, Tallahassee, Florida, may experience freezing temperatures even before New York City feels the full brunt of the cold.
Short-Lived but Severe

The frigid conditions are expected to be short-lived. By Wednesday, daytime highs in NYC are projected to rebound into the 50s, with overnight lows returning to the mid-to-upper 40s. However, meteorologists warn that this pre-winter plunge could be a preview of the harsh winter ahead, potentially bringing nor’easters and heavy snowfall to the Great Lakes and New England in the coming weeks.
Preparing for Early Winter
Forecasters urge residents to bundle up and take precautions as the early-season cold snap moves through. Any coastal storms forming amid the frigid air could intensify into powerful nor’easters, increasing the risk of snow, icy roads, and strong winds.
Experts emphasize that while the timing and intensity of future storms remain uncertain, communities across the Northeast should prepare for colder-than-average conditions and potential snowstorms in December.
