New Movies Streaming
The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
The films of now-separated sibling directors Joel and Ethan Coen (Fargo, The Big Lebowski) imply that Joel chooses the serious (The Tragedy of Macbeth) while Ethan enjoys the ridiculous and surreal (Drive Away Dolls, Honey Don’t!). This is because they were formerly creative partners. Check out Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, and Jennifer Jason Leigh’s outrageous comedy about a small-town bumpkin who rises to the position of president of a global corporation if you’re looking for an underappreciated Coen Brothers picture that leans heavily toward the latter category.
How to watch: Tubi is hosting a live stream of The Hudsucker Proxy.
Sunshine (2007)
The sun has dimmed in the future, making Earth an ice world that is nearly uninhabitable. A ship and its crew sailing across the solar system to drop the largest nuclear bomb in the world into the sun in the hopes of reviving it is humanity’s final hope. Thanks in part to a great ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans as the ship’s engineer, Michelle Yeoh as Oppenheimer, and Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, Danny Boyle’s visually stunning dystopian sci-fi film is one of my favorite films of the 2000s.
How to watch: Sunshine is available on Hulu for streaming.
New TV Shows Streaming
Butterfly
The Jacks (Reacher and Ryan) have made Prime Video the preferred streaming service for spy thrillers that are better than they ought to be. Butterfly, starring Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) as an ex-agent battling his way through South Korea to save his daughter Reina Hardesty and keep one step ahead of his old coworker Piper Perabo, could be added to that list.
How to watch: Butterfly is available on Prime Video for streaming.
Long Story Short
In his latest adult animation series for Netflix, Raphael Bob-Waksberg (BoJack Horseman) tells the life story of three Jewish siblings (Ben Feldman, Abbi Jacobson, and Max Greenfield) in a non-linear narrative that swings forward and backward in time as needed. Similar to BoJack, the show is incredibly entertaining at certain points, but its main focus is on examining sensitive subjects and more profound emotional realities.
How to watch: Netflix is streaming Long Story Short.
Peacemaker
James Gunn’s choice to closely connect the second season of his superhero series to the plot of 2025’s Superman and the developing DC universe lends the show a sense of gravity. However, the sitcom stays away from intricate planning and instead lets Peacemaker (John Cena) and his old Project Butterfly friends simply hang out and enjoy each other’s company.
How to watch: HBO Max is streaming Peacemaker Season 2.
