Why the Red Sox made former captain Jason Varitek take batting practice at Fenway Park

The Red Sox’s captain and starting catcher, Jason Varitek, last took the field in 2011.

However, prior to the Red Sox’s game against the Orioles on Tuesday at Fenway Park, the former backstop and current Boston instructor was once again in the batter’s box.

Why? to assist in deciding the team’s future fantasy football league’s draft order.

Since the Red Sox chipped golf balls off the Green Monster last season to decide the draft order, sorting out draft orders ahead of the NFL season has been an annual (and frequently complex) event at the end of every summer.

The Red Sox relied on Varitek to be the main factor influencing their fantasy football success this season.

During batting practice at Fenway, Varitek plotted Boston’s draft order, as seen on camera by Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.

Varitek had a player’s name on every baseball he threw into the outfield. A designated player’s position in the draft order increased with the distance Varitek hit their ball.

Red Sox reliever Greg Weissert appears to have been less fortunate with the draft order based on the video above. Weissert’s ball was fouled straight up into the cage, resulting in a low draft location, but Varitek predictability sent many of those BP offerings out to the warning track.

The 2025 Red Sox are not the only Major League Baseball team that will utilize their ballpark to organize their next fantasy football league. The Toronto Blue Jays used the closest player to tossing parachute soldier figurines into a bucket from the top of Rogers Centre to decide their draft order last week.
