Is the Market Basket lobster roll good? One Maine writer says no.

Many Bay Staters believe that Market Basket can do no wrong. Customers have joined the worker picket line to support their favorite grocery shop because of its affordable prices, prepared food area, nice customer service, and even its CEO. The Massachusetts-based grocery business is well-liked by many.

But should it be a spot for your next lobster roll? Not, according to one Maine columnist.

Leslie Bridgers, a columnist for the Portland Press Herald who specializes in Maine culture, wrote about her experiences with lobster rolls at different supermarkets and petrol stations, including one she tasted at the Basket.

Market Basket (@marketbasket) shared this post.

The author thought these lobster rolls at Market Basket were the poorest of the three she had tried, so she wasn’t kind to them. She used adjectives that we don’t usually use to describe our cuisine favorably, like mushy and squishy. Additionally, according to Bridgers, the roll tasted like something you might eat before experiencing gastrointestinal problems.

According to Bridgers, it was palatable but couldn’t replace the real thing.

The Market Basket lobster roll is actually more of a lobster salad finger roll, as Bridgers notes. They are small and heavily laden with mayonnaise, but at $8.99 for a pair, they are among the least expensive lobster rolls available.

It seems that Bay Staters may be especially committed to this specific lobster roll because of that latter reality.

In July, a resident of the North Shore shared his thoughts about the lobster roll on the North Shore Dining (Real) Facebook page. He described the Market Basket rolls as being rather good. The majority of the ten responses even concurred.

The Market Basket lobster roll is frequently mentioned in internet debates about the exorbitant cost of lobster rolls.

Last year, someone said on Reddit, “I took two little lobster rolls to the beach over the weekend after purchasing them in a container from Market Basket.” They were great, and it cost nine dollars.

Some have suggested shelling the lobster at home for homemade lobster rolls after having it steamed at Market Basket.

According to a Reddit user in 2023, I go to the counter, place my order, and then go grocery shopping. When I come home, I pick it up and shell them. I spent roughly $34 making six delicious lobster rolls.

Additionally, Bridgers evaluated lobster rolls at Irving’s Rusty Lantern Market and Hannaford, both of which are located in Massachusetts. While keeping an eye on my pocketbook, the former astonished her by writing that she would get it again if I had a taste for a lobster roll.

Although she described the latter as a very authentic lobster roll, she claimed it wasn’t good enough to warrant the $19.99 price tag, which is double what the rolls at Hannaford and Market Basket cost.
