The Essex County District Attorney’s Office said the driver, a 16-year-old, was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
To help the family with funeral costs, a community member launched a fundraising site on Tuesday. With a total fundraising target of $50,000, $29,900 has been raised in less than a day.
I will really miss my daughter. Christine Gatchell, Savannah’s mother, told NBC10, “That was my baby.” My chest has an empty hole in it. I’m not sure how to go on.
Savannah’s sister, Allysa Otero, told NBC10 at the monument built at the collision scene on Atlantic Avenue, “She was always there, always loving.”
She constantly cared about other people and had a big heart. According to the GoFundMe page, she was the type of person you could approach to when you were feeling down or anxious, and she would be there to listen and offer consolation. She touched countless individuals around her and had so much life, light, and joy in her even at such a young age.
She had many friends and was gregarious and affectionate. Christine Gatchell told WHDH that she still had a lot of life to live.
“I just know that my daughter was technically sneaking out,” she added. What will you do, teenagers? I attempted to stop her.
She told NBC10 that she wants whoever caused the accident to be held accountable.
