Waiting a little while to go grocery shopping could be worthwhile: Stop & Shop declared that starting Friday, thousands of items will have their prices reduced locally.
The supermarket company said on Tuesday that it will be implementing pricing reductions at its 88 Eastern Massachusetts sites until the end of August. The chain claims that customers will find lower prices for both national and Stop & Shop brands in every category.
In a press release, Roger Wheeler, president of the Quincy-based supermarket company, stated that “Madison is our home, and bringing meaningful savings to millions of customers right in our backyard is an important milestone in our broader strategy.”
“All 116 Massachusetts Stop & Shop stores will have lower everyday prices once the prices in these stores are reduced,” Wheeler said.
We are aware that value is more important than ever, and this pricing investment—the biggest one we have made so far—is just one illustration of the efforts we are making to provide our consumers with excellent value, premium goods, and service in our stores. Wheeler went on.
After politicians questioned whether the grocers were doing enough to cut prices, the announcement was made.
In a May letter to the lawmakers, Wheeler cited the 2024 announcement of its multi-year plan to rebuild stores and reduce costs. He claimed that because of supply chain problems and other broader economic difficulties, prices had not yet decreased.

Stop & Shop says it will close stores, but not which ones
After the Hype Square Task Force discovered that Stop & Shop charged more for goods in working-class districts than in richer neighborhoods, lawmakers first voiced their concerns in September of last year.
In particular, some items at a Jamaica Plain Stop & Shop cost 18% higher than those at a Dedham branch. The task committee reported that costs in Jamaica Plain had been reduced by April.
In a May statement, Sen. Elizabeth Warren told Boston.com, “We will continue to exert pressure to ensure that Stop & Shop fulfills its commitment so that families, particularly those in working-class neighborhoods, aren’t being overcharged based on where they live.”
Wheeler stated in the letter to lawmakers that the location of the business has no bearing on prices.
According to the news release, Stop & Shop offers weekly sale discounts on more than 10,000 items in addition to the new, reduced prices.
Previously, the grocery chain put coupon kiosks in every shop, reduced the cost of popular bakery items, and removed paper bag fees except in cases where they were required. According to the announcement, the grocery store also offers freebies to customers who use the coupon kiosk, including one full-size item per month and a protein on sale as a meal deal for a family of four.
