Trevor Rogers, Orioles top Red Sox 6-3 at Fenway

BOSTON (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-3 on Monday night thanks to a single homer and an RBI triple from Gunnar Henderson and a shutout by Trevor Rogers into the seventh inning.

Before being called up for his major-league debut on Sunday, Samuel Basallo, a top Orioles prospect and the eighth-ranked prospect in baseball, doubled off the Green Monster for his first extra-base hit and added a two-run single in the ninth. Three singles were recorded by Ryan Mountcastle.

Dustin May (7-9), the Boston starter, lost for the second time in three starts since he was acquired from the Dodgers at the trade deadline. He gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings.

Jarren Duran’s two-out, two-run double in the ninth gave the Red Sox a 6-3 lead. For the last out, however, Ceddanne Rafaela hit a broken-bat grounder to third thanks to Yennier Cano.

Rogers (6-2) barely faced serious opposition in the seventh inning, when the Orioles had already taken a 4-0 lead. Trevor Story doubled with one out to put runners on second and third after he had walked Alex Bregman to start the inning.

Center fielder Colton Cowser crashed into the Green Monster after Duran hit a line drive; Cowser made the grab, allowing Boston to score one run on a sacrifice fly. Rogers ended the inning by striking Rafaela out.

Rogers reduced his ERA to 1.41 while giving up just one run, four hits, a walk, and seven strikeouts. Rogers hasn’t tossed enough innings to earn a spot among the league leaders, but that’s still less than Paul Skenes’ 2.16 ERA, which is the lowest in the majors.

The last game of the two-game series will pit Boston RHP Walker Buehler (7-7) against Orioles RHP Tomoyuki Sugano (10-5).
