Four minors were taken into custody by State Police on Friday in relation to auto thefts: three in Dedham and one in neighboring Boston.
According to State Police, the Troop H Community Action Team, also referred to as the CAT Team, had been notified of multiple car thefts, including the theft of a white Honda CR-V from Braintree, a white Volkswagen Jetta from Boston, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee from Milton.
After confirming that the Jeep and Honda were stolen, troopers secured the area shortly before 10 p.m. on Friday after finding them in an abandoned parking lot on a dead-end residential street in Dedham.
When the State Police vehicle and tow truck came into view a short while later, a silver Honda Pilot drove along the street before reversing into the main road, according to police. The troopers stopped the pilot on the main road because they thought he was coming back to pick up the stolen cars.
Police said the CAT Team troopers saw several of the five people inside the car moving wildly before they got close to it.
As troopers drew closer, a young man then ran out of the back passenger side door, according to authorities. Later, the culprit behind a River Street store was captured by Boston police.
According to authorities, three more people attempted to escape from the car but were apprehended after failing.
According to the authorities, the driver was an unintentional rideshare driver.
According to reports, the troopers discovered three more firearms during a follow-up check after discovering a gun in the back seat. Large capacity magazines that could store more than ten rounds were found in several of the firearms. According to authorities, the serial number of one firearm was vandalized, and another weapon had a switch device—an illegal add-on that turns a handgun into a machine gun-like fully automatic weapon.
One suspect was allegedly found to be in possession of a 40 millimeter cartridge of ammunition when troopers searched suspects on the scene.
Due to their juvenile age, the identities of the four suspects were withheld; they were all booked at the Milton Barracks.
Police discovered warrants for armed robbery, home invasion, firearm violations, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, property vandalism, breaking and entering, and other counts while searching the suspects’ records.
Three counts of possessing a large-capacity feeding device, four counts of carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card (FID) card, and one count of possessing a loaded machine gun and defacing a firearm serial number were brought against the four suspects, according to the police. Resisting arrest was another charge brought against one of the suspects.
The suspects were taken to the Department of Youth Services and kept without the possibility of release on bond.
