FDA Issues Highest-Risk Recall for Tuna Salad Products; 7 States Affected

Fifteen tuna salad products have been recalled and classified as Class I—the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) highest-alert level—due to concerns over possible listeria contamination.

The recalls stem from breadcrumbs supplied by Idaho-based Reser’s Fine Food, which were used as an ingredient in the affected tuna salads. The products were sold at Albertsons, Randalls, and Tom Thumb stores in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas, as well as Jewel Osco stores in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. The recalls were issued in mid-July and formally classified as Class I on August 13.

Health Risks From Listeria

The FDA warns that listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, elderly individuals, and people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are at risk of miscarriages and stillbirths if infected.

While healthy people may experience only short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, the FDA stresses the importance of immediate action.

What Consumers Should Do

Shoppers who purchased the recalled tuna salad products should not consume them. Instead, they are advised to discard the products or return them to the store for a full refund.

The FDA also urges consumers to clean and sanitize any utensils, containers, or surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products, as listeria can survive at refrigerated temperatures and spread easily.
