HOUSTON (AP) On Wednesday night, the Houston Astros defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-1 with to home runs from Jeremy Pea and Yainer Diaz, and Hunter Brown gave up just one run in 6 2/3 innings for his tenth victory.
Boston was held to 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position by Brown (10-5), who gave up three walks and six hits. The Astros now lead the AL West by one game over Seattle. The Mariners lost to Baltimore 4-3.
On Walker Buehler’s fifth pitch, Pe a launched his fifth leadoff shot of the season, starting a two-run first. With two outs in the sixth and the Astros ahead 2-1, Diaz added a two-out RBI single before hitting his 17th home run off a 0-1 cutter from Buehler (7-7) 415 to left-center.
With two outs in the sixth, Boston had the tying run at third base. Red Sox manager Alex Cora demanded that Brown be called for a balk when Romy Gonzalez was at the plate outside the dugout. The four umpires then met, but no objection was raised. An inning later, Cora was ejected for the fifth time in 2025 during a pitching change.
In the eighth, Brown was replaced by Bennett Sousa, who pitched 1 1/3 innings. Bryan Abreu made his first save in the ninth.
In the sixth, Diaz gave Houston a three-run lead with a two-out, two-run homer.
In his last 13 games, Diaz is hitting.321 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.
RHP Lucas Giolito (8-2 3.77 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Red Sox on Friday night as they begin a three-game home series against Miami. LHP Framber Valdez (11-5 2.97) is scheduled to start Friday night’s opening game of the Astros’ three-game home series against Baltimore.
