When it comes to overcoming consecutive four-win seasons, the 2025 Patriots have a long way to go.
However, three-time Super Bowl champion Julian Edelman is pleased with what he sees from a redesigned New England roster this summer after attending Patriots training camp last week.
“The team I saw last week is an improvement over a 2024 team that couldn’t gain any traction during a chaotic camp,” said Edelman, who was on the field in Foxborough during a tough padded session on August 4.
During the duo’s Dudes on Dudes podcast, Edelman informed former Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski, “Josh [McDaniels] looks like he has the offense going.” This year, there seems to be a lot more unity. They appear enthusiastic. Drake [Maye] looked great, in my opinion. He was making it appear so simple, after all. That indicates that he looks good.
Simply operational, such as identifying the defense, getting the cadence off, changing protection, getting the play in, getting the personnel groups in, getting the play call, and looking great. The young player out of the backfield, TreVeyon Henderson, looked excellent. had a few major plays while attending Ohio State as a second-round choice. It appears intelligent and hungry.
The return of McDaniels as offensive coordinator, according to Edelman, brought some familiarity to the team’s offensive schemes during camp, even though Foxborough now has a new head coach in Mike Vrabel. This sentiment wasn’t present during last year’s camp under Jerod Mayo and Alex Van Pelt.
Unlike last year, when they were running a totally different offense, West Coast, it was wonderful to attend this year’s [camp] because I could see the scheme they were using and mentally calculate a plus-minus system for each individual. “I had no idea what was happening,” Edelman said. Just knowing the offense and witnessing their execution was enough for me this year.
A lot of guys were making plays, and I thought, “Dude.” Pop Douglas performed in a few plays. [Javon] Baker and [Kayshon] Boutte made a couple plays at six and nine. They also missed a few plays. However, they have the ability to be a successful football team that competes. After your four victories last year, you had to control your expectations.
It’s unclear if the Patriots can truly contend for the postseason this season with Maye and Vrabel at the forefront, as Edelman pointed out.
However, Edelman was impressed by Vrabel’s efforts to set a new standard in Foxborough as the Patriots attempt to move forward and create a winning culture in 2025.
Edelman told Gronkowski, “I thought they looked like a professional football club.” And you want to look like that. There was nobody on the ground. It went quite smoothly.
Everyone is excited. Vrabel is quite energetic. He is everywhere. He’s playing with guys in the offensive drills. It was enjoyable.
