by Boston (AP) To defeat the new-look Houston Astros 2-1 on Friday night, the Boston Red Sox rallied in the tenth inning as Roman Anthony hit a fly ball over drawn-in center fielder Chas McCormick’s head to score the automatic runner from third.
Christian Walker’s home run in the second inning put Boston under 1-0, but Wilyer Abreu’s sacrifice fly in the seventh tied the score.
Abreu began the bottom of the 10th on second base, and Ceddanne Rafaela swung away and hit the ball a few feet in front of the plate after attempting in vain to bunt him to third. At third, catcher Yanier Diaz attempted to catch Abreu, but his throw was late.
A 2-2 pitch to center was lined by Anthony. It flew just past McCormick’s glove as he chased after it, scoring a walk-off single.

The Red Sox reached a season-high nine games above.500 as they won for the fifth time in six games behind a flawless 10th inning from Greg Weissert (4-3).
Bennett Sousa (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season without getting an out.
Jeremy Pea had three hits for Houston, Christian Walker hit a home run, and Hunter Brown recorded a shutout into the seventh inning. The AL West-leading Astros loaded up in their pursuit of a ninth consecutive postseason appearance on Thursday, with Carlos Correa going hitless and Jessie S. Sanchez recording two hits in his return to the franchise that selected him first overall in 2012.
The Astros had a runner on base with one out in the top of the tenth when Trevor Story threw home to prevent the game-winning run from scoring after Mauricio Dubn hit a grounder to short.
In his first two at-bats against the Astros, Bregman, who spent his first nine years in Houston, singled.
Walker Buehler (6-6) of the Red Sox will take on Colton Gordon (4-3) of the Astros on Saturday.
