Story’s homer and Giolito’s strong outing lift Red Sox over Twins 8-5

AP/MINNEAPOLIS Lucas Giolito threw six solid innings, Trevor Story homered, doubled, and drove in three runs, and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins 8–5 on Tuesday night.

Giolito (7-2) struck out five and allowed one run on five hits and two walks. For the Red Sox, Jarren Duran also stole a base, singled, and hit a home run.

Brooks Lee drove in all five Minnesota runs and hit two home homers. Carlos Correa departed the game due to illness, and Lee came in to take his place in the third inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Boston’s lead was reduced to 8-5 by a two-run drive by Lee off of former teammate Jorge Alcala. Aroldis Chapman earned his 19th save after striking out Mickey Gasper on three pitches after Royce Lewis hit a single with two outs.

In his major league debut, Twins pitcher Pierson Ohl (0-1) kept the Red Sox scoreless for two innings, but he was unable to stop Boston’s four-run third inning.

On Roman Anthony’s single, Ceddanne Rafaela scored with a triple with one out. After Alex Bregman doubled, Anthony scored after Willi Castro, the left fielder, unable to catch the ball.

Story’s two-run homer put Boston ahead 4-0, but Ohl struck out Duran for the second out.

In the fifth inning, Duran blasted a solo home run off of reliever Michael Tonkin.

Ohl was just one strike away from ending the third inning with a 2-0 deficit. However, Story blasted a changeup into the bullpens in left-center after fouling out two full-count pitches.

In a single game, Lee became the sixth Twins player to hit home runs from both sides of the plate.

The Red Sox will pitch RHP Brayan Bello (6-5, 3.32 ERA) in Wednesday’s series finale. A starting pitcher has not been announced by the Twins.
