On July 4, Grotto, a small, underground Italian eatery in Beacon Hill, announced on its website and social media that it would close at the end of the summer.
Before revealing that Grotto would soon close permanently, owner Scott Herritt started the message with a reflection on the restaurant’s 22nd anniversary on Bowdoin Street.

Herritt posted on Instagram, “I want to share with mixed emotions that Grotto will be closing later this summer.” The moment has come for a new chapter, although this has been a very tough decision.
Although the lease for Grotto’s secret location expires in September, Herritt stated he was unsure of the precise date of Grotto’s departure.
Until then, patrons can eat dinner at Grotto from 5 to 9 p.m. any day of the week.
In a beautiful, softly lit dining room, Grotto was renowned for offering traditional Italian fare including bolognese, fra diavolo, and spaghetti & meatballs. According to Axios Boston, Herritt also took over the famed Marliave restaurant in 2008, but it never reopened after briefly closing due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Thank you to all of our amazing employees, both current and former, as well as to everyone who has eaten with us throughout the years: “Herritt said.” Grotto has been a unique place because of you, and I will always cherish the memories we shared.
