FoxBoroughThe Raiders have cut Christian Wilkins, a native of Massachusetts who recorded nine sacks with the Dolphins in 2023.

Coach Mike Vrabel informed reporters on Tuesday that the Patriots will investigate his availability.

I believe that we will talk. I don’t have all the details of Christian’s location because this is quite fresh. We will undoubtedly talk because I know Christian and recruited him during his high school years here in the Connecticut region.

Before transferring to Suffield Academy in Connecticut, where he was a four-star recruit, Wilkins started his high school career at Framingham High. He was regarded as the 32nd best prospect in the country by ESPN for the Class of 2015.

In 2013, while Wilkins was a sophomore, Vrabel served as Ohio State’s assistant coach. Wilkins signed with Clemson despite Ohio State being one of his first picks.

In the 2019 NFL Draft, Wilkins was chosen by the Dolphins with the 13th overall pick in the first round. Last summer, he agreed to a four-year, $110 million contract with the Raiders.

Because of the manner he managed his recovery from a fractured bone in his left foot, Las Vegas fired him and canceled the remaining $35.2 million in guaranteed money on his contract, according to ESPN.

According to reports, the staff thought he needed more surgery to fix the injury, but Wilkins refused to have it done.

Christian Wilkins has been notified of his release from the Raiders, and we have determined that it is best for the organization to move on from him, the team said in a statement.

This team is dedicated to being the best both on and off the field. This trade is essential for the entire organization to move forward and get ready for a new season because there is no clear plan or path for Christian to return to play in the future.

Wilkins’ grievance has been filed by the NFLPA, and the proceedings are ongoing.

Last season, Wilkins missed all but five games. He recorded two sacks and 17 tackles. Prior to previous season, he had never had fewer than 47 tackles, and the number of sacks tied his career low.

Wilkins was a stalwart on Miami’s defensive line throughout his five seasons with the Dolphins. Despite his recent serious injury, the Patriots appear interested enough to talk about the prospect of bringing him in.
