Celtics waived G League MVP JD Davison, get under NBA salary cap’s second apron

In their most recent cost-cutting measure to evade one of the harsher provisions of the league’s luxury tax, the Celtics terminated guard JD Davison on Thursday.

In 2022, the 22-year-old Davison was selected in the second round from Alabama. Even though he was a key member of the Maine Celtics and won G League MVP in the most recent season, he struggled to establish himself as a regular member of the NBA-caliber team. During his three seasons with the Celtics, Davison averaged 1.9 points per game while playing in 36 games.

His contract option was allegedly picked up by the Celtics in June, although the deal was not guaranteed. Davison, who finished the previous season with an average of 25.6 points and 7.7 assists for Maine, will now have the opportunity to join an NBA team elsewhere.

The Celtics are now below the NBA salary cap second apron after cutting Davison’s $2.27 salary. Avoiding the secondary component of the league’s luxury tax has been a driving force behind much of Boston’s summer thus far, including the trades of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday.

According to reports, the Celtics have succeeded in lowering their tax threshold by waiving Davison. According to Boston GlobeCeltics reporter Adam Himmelsbach, the trade also gives Boston an open roster place, but no additional [Celtics] moves are expected to happen very soon.

Fun fact: JD Davison was an SEC player before joining the NBA from Alabama. Which Southeaster Conference player was the most recent to be chosen first overall in the NBA Draft?

Hint: A Georgia-based Western Conference team selected him in the draft.
