Turkeyfoot Creek Creamery, an Ohio-based dairy producer, has issued a voluntary recall of several ice cream flavors due to the presence of undeclared soy and wheat allergens, according to a release from the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
Why It Matters
Millions of Americans suffer from food allergies and sensitivities, and even small amounts of allergens like soy or wheat can lead to serious or life-threatening reactions. The FDA has classified this recall as a Class II health risk, meaning consumption of the product could cause temporary or medically reversible health issues.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall includes pint-sized cartons of the following Turkeyfoot Creek Creamery flavors:
- Mocha
- Cacao
- Cookie Dough
- Cookies and Cream
- Cacao Brownie Bites
- Chocolate Peanut Butter
- Avalanche
All expiration dates are included in the recall, with expiration markings located on the bottom of each paper carton. The products were distributed to six retail locations across Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana and have been removed from store shelves.
Health Risks
- Soy allergies can cause reactions from hives and cramps to anaphylaxis.
- Wheat allergies may lead to skin reactions, respiratory problems, and severe allergic responses.
Because these ingredients were not listed in the “Contains” statement on the packaging, allergic individuals may unknowingly consume them.
No Illnesses Reported—Yet
So far, no adverse reactions or illnesses have been reported. However, authorities urge individuals who experience symptoms after consuming these products to seek immediate medical attention.
What You Should Do
Consumers who purchased any of the recalled products should not consume them and instead return them to the store for a full refund.
