This weekend, Creation Entertainment’s “
Vampire Fan Weekend
” takes over the Westin Boston
Seaport
.
From Friday night through Sunday, there will be panels, signings, photo ops, and karaoke parties.
While it’s called – rather generically – the Vampire Fan Weekend, please know: this event is for “Vampire Diaries” die-hards. The headliners include actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. Almost all talent is from “Vampire Diaries” or its spinoff shows, “The Originals” and “Legacies.”
A shorthand for those who know and love this world:
Damon (Somerhalder) and Stefan (Wesley) are on the lineup. Elena (Nina Dobrev) is not. Caroline (Candice King) is. Bonnie (Kat Graham) is not. Alaric (Matt Davis) is. Enzo (Michael Malarkey) is not. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is not, but his brother, Elijah (Daniel Gillies), will be present.
If that doesn’t make any sense to you, this convention probably isn’t
for
you. But show this to your kid. They might have plenty to say about it.
Creation Entertainment, a company with a history rooted in Star Trek fandom, hosts these kinds of events in cities all over, throughout the year.
Lynn Esparo, speaking for Creation, said the company still hosts Star Trek-themed events, but that their tour for the fans of the long-running show “Supernatural” is one of the most popular.
The “Vampire Diaries” programming also appeals to a robust fandom, partly because it’s a show that continues to find new fans, she said. There are people who watched “Vampire Diaries” when it aired from 2009 to 2017. Then there are fans who found it during lockdown, the children of original fans. That means this weekend’s events will have fans of all ages, she said. Esparo said the vibe to expect is: excitement.
“I do love the fandom for ‘Vampire Diaries,’ because they’re all still just really giddy. [Some of] these folks are just starting watching the series, or just catching on. It’s lovely that it lives on. They’re all just having so much fun,” Esparo said.
Esparo said the actors tend to be generous with fans who sign up for photo ops. She said Somerhalder – a.k.a Damon – sometimes has to be pulled away to the next experience because he’s so generous with his time.
“We’re always laughing at Ian because he just takes so long with everybody,” Esparo said. “But it’s just because he’s such a lovely human and he’s generally interested in, like, ‘Where’d you come from? What are you doing here? How are you today?’’’
Each event has prices listed for entry (Creation also
has an app
where you can see the schedule and ticket price for each fan opportunity).
By the way, if you are thinking, “these are not my vampires,” there’s the
Fan Expo in Boston
next month. It’s a more general fan convention, with actors from Star Wars, professional wrestlers, and big names like John Cena.
But James Marsters will be there, too. He’s Spike on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
