Gerhardt Konig, a former physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center who is accused of attempting to kill his wife when they were hiking on a trail in Hawaii, made his initial court appearance on Thursday and was detained on accusations of attempted murder.
Authorities in Hawaii stated that the man who had formerly worked as a physician at UPMC and was currently an assistant professor at Pitt was taken into custody earlier this week after he attempted to force his wife off of a hiking trail and beat her in the head with a rock many times.
Thursday marked Konig’s first appearance in a district court in Hawaii, which came several days after he was taken into custody along Pali Highway in Oahu and charged with murder in the second degree.
It was claimed by KGMB-TV in Honolulu, that newly disclosed court documents stated that the conflict began when his wife refused to take a photo near the edge of a cliff. It was said by her that he hit her in the head ten times with a rock, seized her hair, and crushed her face into the ground. She also reported to the authorities that he attempted to inject her with an unidentified liquid.
The bond amount of $5 million that was established earlier this week has not been posted by Konig, and a preliminary hearing has been planned for the 31st of March.
