Tragic Loss: 7-Year-Old Boy Killed by Drive-By Bullet While Playing Video Games at Home. A woman from North Carolina was charged with murder in connection with the death of a 7-year-old boy who was playing video games and eating cheese fries when a stray gunshot from a passing car entered his house.
Sierra Chambers, 19, will now be charged with murder in connection with Zion Gibbs’ death, up from her original charge of accessory after the fact. Following an inquiry, the charges were enhanced, according to local ABC affiliate WTVD.
The Fayetteville Police Department said that Zion was slain on June 7 on the 800 block of Danish Drive.
He was mortally wounded as bullets tore through the walls of his house. Days later, he passed away in a hospital.
A neighbor claimed to have heard gunshots, saw the aftermath, and seen a car pass slowly.
The neighbor told local NBC station WRAL, “I taped everything off after hearing the police pull up after waiting for a few minutes.” The mother was out there. She was going crazy. She told me that her infant had been shot in the face. She claimed that after passing by, the people rushed inside the house.
WRAL was informed by another neighbor that she heard over fifteen bullets fired.
A bullet pierced the back of his brain and hit him beneath his left eye. After being on life support for several days, he passed away.
On October 31, police declared that Chambers had been arrested as an accessory after the fact.
However, it’s unclear if the shooter has been identified by authorities. A request for comment from Law&Crime regarding other suspects was not immediately answered by a police official on Tuesday.
Following Chambers’ arrest, Zion’s mother, Myra Gibbs, told WRAL, “I can’t wait for this to help us figure out who took my baby away.”
She was devastated by her son’s murder.
“There are many reasons why my heart is so broken, and it’s beyond words. In September, she told WTVD, “I wouldn’t wish this on anybody.” “This is a 7-year-old boy who is playing a video game and eating cheese fries in the comfort of his own home. He is an innocent victim.”
He was among those children who asked, “Mommy, are you okay? He would say, “I love you guys,” two or three times in a single night, every single night. She went on, “He was just a loving child.”
The aunt stated, “Even though it was hard for my sister to let go and return him to God, she knew that even though he was no longer physically present, he would always be with her in spirit as her guardian angel, keeping watch over her as he always did.” “As Zion moved into the spirit world alongside God, we now cherish this unique day, June 10, 2024.”
“If you ever met Zion or knew him, you knew that Zion truly embodied the meaning of his name,” she added. “Just like the biblical reference to Zion as a place of peace, strength, and spiritual significance, Zion exuded these qualities in everything he did whether it was through his nightly checks on his mom filled with hugs and kisses or his random moments of singing an inspirational song when someone needed it.”
