Baltimore’s annual Washington Monument lighting kicks off the holiday season. BALTIMORE — The holiday season was once again ushered in with the 53rd annual Lighting of the Washington Monument at Mount Vernon Place in Baltimore.
The Mount Vernon Place Conservancy hosted the event, which included music, beer concessions, 20 local food vendors, and more. A fire at Camp Small, a wood supply on W. Cold Spring Lane, plus strong winds forced the cancellation of the light show and fireworks.
The earliest significant monument to George Washington in America is the 200-year-old Washington Monument in Baltimore.
Emma Loftus, Associate Director of the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy, stated, “Seeing people happy, together, and kind of experiencing the best of Baltimore and the spirit of the city is the most exciting thing.”
The light show and fireworks were created by Image Engineering, but they never happened.
Tim Small, the Director of Pyrotechnics for Image Engineering, stated, “Our crew has been wiring the show for about a week now.” “Here today we’re doing the final quality control checks, making sure everything looks beautiful, they’re going to fire where they’re supposed to and we’ve accounted for the wind so we can have the safest show that we can put forward tonight.”
On stage were the Morgan State Choir and the Peabody Brass Ensemble.
According to Loftus, “I adore the musical performances,” In addition to Morgan State Choir, the Baltimore School for the Arts is simply amazing. I find it incredibly amazing to witness that; this city’s ability is incredible.”
“Community, getting together with our friends and neighbors and watching some music and fireworks,” Hannah Brady, one of the attendees, stated.
