Georgia Woman Sentenced After Egging House and Killing Boyfriend During Lover’s Quarrel

Georgia Woman Sentenced After Egging House and Killing Boyfriend During Lover's Quarrel

In the midst of an ongoing argument, a lady recently entered a guilty plea to shooting her lover to death while he was at another woman’s residence.

Sydney Maughon was sentenced to life in prison with the option of release after 30 years for malice murder, according to a Dec. 3 announcement from the District Attorney’s Office for the Griffin Judicial Circuit.

On July 3, 2023, officers were called to a report of a man down on Dobbins Mill Road. They discovered Jonathan Gilbert dead from what appeared to be gunshot wounds, according to an initial news release from the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators used a fingerprint scan to positively identify him even though he was not carrying any identification at the time.

An “ongoing lover’s quarrel” caused the tragic incident, according to Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix.

Then-18-year-old Maughon, 18-year-old Jeremy Munson, and 19-year-old McKenzie Davenport visited the house of a woman whom Maughon “had been threatening to fight over Instagram,” according to the sheriff’s office and prosecutors.Prosecutors said that Maughon “became enraged” after she and Davenport tossed eggs and rocks at her boyfriend, Gilbert, who was at her house at the time.

According to reports, the victim saw them and confronted them outside without a weapon.

Gilbert can be seen sprinting toward the back of the house in a video footage, according to the district attorney’s office, and Maughon can be heard asking someone to “shoot him, shoot him.”

Maughon allegedly took Munson’s gun and shot her lover twice after Gilbert allegedly approached the defendant’s vehicle. Davenport allegedly fled the car after the shooting to get someone to dial 911.

Prosecutors claim that Maughon and Munson escaped to the residence of Maughon’s parents. They gave the revolver to Maughon’s father and told him about the incident.

According to reports, the father encouraged them “to let the police find them” rather than calling the police and concealed the handgun in the closet.

According to the district attorney’s office, Davenport helped police locate the suspects by letting them use the monitoring feature on her phone after Maughon and Munson left to work at Pizza Hut.

When Davenport went to call the police, she allegedly left her phone and shoes in the car.

While Munson’s case is still pending, Davenport pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to her involvement in the shooting.

“This case is tragic and completely illogical,” stated Senior Assistant District Attorney Audrey D. Holliday.

Ms. Maughon shot and killed a young guy who had nothing to do with the drama she intended to create with this other female in a cold, heartless, and malevolent manner. After that, she and Mr. Munson left him to perish in the street and left for work.
