Storm Hits Western NY Thruway Shut Down Due to Lake Effect Snow

Until further notice, all commercial trucks are prohibited from traveling in either direction from Exit 46 (Rochester – Corning – I-390) to the Pennsylvania line on the New York State Thruway as of around 7:45 p.m.

As heavy lake effect snow continues to fall Friday evening, a section of the state Thruway, often known as Interstate 90, is closed close to the western border with Pennsylvania.

According to the state authority, the westbound portion of the Thruway was blocked from Exit 57 in Hamburg as of approximately 5:30 p.m.

This means that Exit 57, which is roughly 60 miles from the state’s western border with Pennsylvania, is where all westbound drivers are being forced to exit.

The Thruway was stopped by the state earlier this afternoon from Exit 59 at Dunkirk, which is roughly 30 miles from the state line. Additionally, I-90’s Pennsylvania side is closed.

Thruway is requesting that drivers stay off the Thruway west of Lackawanna.

As severe and potentially hazardous bands of lake effect snow start to sweep into 11 counties in Western and Northern New York today, a state of emergency has been declared in those areas.

According to the most recent estimates, Watertown may receive up to 70 inches by Monday.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced earlier today that New York had prohibited tandem and empty commercial vehicles from using major Western New York roads, including a portion of the Thruway.
