RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. – Rankin County officers said the man who tried to hit a woman with a chainsaw was caught after a chase through the city of Jackson.
Police said they got a call from the woman on Monday, November 11, just after 3:15 a.m. After what she thought was a domestic argument, she asked for a civil standby to get some personal items from a house on Loflin Road in the Florence area.
As officers arrived at the scene, the woman told them that the suspect, Jason Antonio Slater, had tried to attack her with a chainsaw and stolen her silver Toyota Camry.
Police said they saw the car and tried to stop it, according to deputies. That being said, the subject did not yield.
Investigators say that Florence, Richland, and Pearl police helped as the car went north on Highway 80 and then ran west into the City of Jackson. Capitol cops were told about it and helped.
The spike strips used by the police caused the Camry to lose a tire and crash at the corner of Highway 80 and Gallatin Street. Sheriff’s deputies said Slater tried to get away, but a taser was used to stop him.
Medical staff at the scene treated Slater, and he was then cleared to be taken to the Rankin County Detention Center. He is being charged with aggravated domestic abuse, carjacking, and running away from police. Slater is being held without bond until his first court date in Rankin County Court.
