California Woman Charged with DUI Following Fatal Crash in Southwest Las Vegas Valley

LAS VEGAS — After a crash in southwest Las Vegas on Wednesday night, one woman died and another is being charged with DUI.

At 5:45 p.m., the accident was reported on South Hualapai Way, just north of West Flamingo Road. Two cars were involved. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police say that a 51-year-old woman driving a Toyota Prius left a private drive on Hualapai and went north. She then made a U-turn to get onto southbound Hualapai, where she was hit by a woman driving a Buick Encore, which caused the Buick to flip over.

Police said that both women were taken to UMC’s Trauma Unit, but the 51-year-old woman was declared dead soon after she got there. Police recognized the other driver as Michelle Cardenas, 29, from Huntington Park, California. She was arrested at UMC because she showed signs of being drunk.

Cardenas is being held at the Clark County Detention Center on charges of DUI and careless driving that caused death. She is due to go to court for the first time on Thursday, November 7.

The woman who died’s name will be made public by the Clark County Coroner’s office. Metro said she was the 134th person killed in a car accident in its area in 2024.
