NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – A man accused of killing a sanitation worker has been brought back to South Carolina by the North Charleston Police Department. He was caught in New York three months ago by U.S. Marshals.
Harve Jacobs, a spokesman for the North Charleston Police Department, says that on Tuesday night, officers brought Tyrell Smith back to South Carolina.
U.S. Marshals caught Tyrell Lamont Smith, 24, in New York on August 1.
In the death of 26-year-old Da’Tawn Gatling, he was charged with murder and having a weapon during a violent crime.
The government says Smith fought extradition after he was caught in New York.
On July 18, the shooting took place on Bayfield Drive. The police arrived at the spot at 10:49 a.m. that morning and found Gatline in a garbage truck with a gunshot wound.
Gatling tried to leave the scene of the crime after being shot, but he lost control of the garbage truck and crashed it into a tree on Dorchester Road.
Police think Gatling was shot while picking up trash on Bayfield Drive. After being taken to a nearby hospital, he later died.
