San Jose Man Arrested in Connection with 113 Retail Theft Incidents, Police Report

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Police said Monday that the man who they say stole from over 100 stores in San Jose is now in jail.

The goods worth thousands of dollars were stolen from 113 stores, including Home Depot, Lowes, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target, according to police. Johnny Pena.

The police said that they began looking into Pena in March as part of their organized retail theft team. Pena was caught by police on October 28 and taken to the Elmwood Men’s Correctional Complex jail on charges of big theft.

The jail records show that Pena is being held without bail.

Mayor Matt Mahan said about the arrest, “Retail theft hurts our economy, taxes working families with theft, and makes us all feel less safe.”

“This is an example of someone who has a blatant disregard for the law, victimizing over one hundred businesses here in San José,” Chief Paul Joseph said. “Our Organized Retail Theft Detail has done an outstanding job in making sure suspects like Johnny Pena know what happens when they commit these crime sprees in our city.”

The case could be looked into because the department’s organized store theft unit was given a $8.4 million grant.

Det. David Moody can be reached at [email protected] or (408) 277-4166 if you know anything about the store thefts.
