Chicago Police Officer Was Shot and Killed After a Traffic Stop

Police say a Chicago police officer died after being shot on Monday night in the East Chatham neighborhood on the South Side of the city.

At a news meeting early Tuesday morning, Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling said, “I come to you with a heavy heart because we’ve lost another police officer who was out working, trying to protect the city, and was tragically taken away from us by gunfire.”

Around 8 p.m., the killing happened near East 82nd Street and Ingleside Avenue, not long after police pulled over a car with three people inside. As the police approached the car, one of the people inside fired quickly, hitting an officer multiple times, Snelling said.

The cop who was hurt was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, but it was decided that he was dead there.

Snelling said the cop, who was 26 years old, had been with the Chicago Police Department for almost three years. Out of respect for the officer’s family, Chicago police didn’t name him right away.

Snelling said, “He was a proud person who worked very hard and gave his life for this city.” “There is a family who is sad.” Please, please pray for and think about the family. Losing someone so quickly is harder than anyone knows.

Police say that someone else inside the car was hit by gunfire and later died from their injuries. The person was found with a gun, according to the cops. Snelling said the person who shot the police officer tried to get away in the car but failed and ran away. That person was finally caught by police.

Police say that at least one cop fired a gun during the incident.

Authorities say they found a second gun at the scene with an extended clip.

Mayor Brandon Johnson told the people of Chicago to hug each other and pray for the family of the cop.

He said, “This terrible loss cuts deep.” “The wound is very bad.” We need to wrap our arms around each other to get through this terrible loss. “Recognize how valuable and brave our police officers are who risk their lives every day for us.”

It is standard practice for Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability to be called to a killing. COPA asked anyone who knew anything about what happened to call them at 312-746-3609 or go to their website.
