Man Formally Charged After Striking Unmarked Police Cruiser, Leading to Hours-Long Standoff

A man has been officially charged with hitting an unmarked police car, which led to an hours-long standoff in Dayton.

Police charged James Hancock on Monday with obstructing official business, failing to follow a police officer’s order or signal, and causing fear. This was recorded in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court records.

As News Center 7 has already said, Hancock is said to have hit an undercover police car near W. Siebenthaler and Salem Avenues and then crashed into an apartment building on Wentworth Avenue on October 18.

There was a standoff for hours, and a SWAT team, a bomb squad, and people who could talk to the hostages were called to the building.

About five hours into the battle, SWAT arrested Hancock.

News Center 7 was told by Dayton Police Lieutenant Mark Ponichtera that Hancock was wanted for gross abuse of a body and tampering with evidence.

“He was also a person of interest in the same murder,” Ponichtera said.

Hancock was first charged with these crimes on October 17.

He is still being held in the Montgomery County Jail, and he is due in court on November 7.

News Center 7 will keep up with this story.
