An arrest has been made for a guy who is linked to shootings at a Democratic Party office in Tempe, a suburb of Phoenix.
The man was recognized as 60-year-old Jeffrey Michael Kelly by police. He was arrested on Tuesday and charged with 10 counts, including terrorism, criminal damage, and illegal discharge, among other things.
According to court papers, Kelly could face more charges related to an incident where he allegedly left bags of white powder on political signs in the area and hung political signs that were lined with razor blades.
According to the Arizona Republic, which is part of the USA TODAY Network, about a dozen people, some from the FBI, were seen at Kelly’s house on Wednesday morning making a list of the guns that had been found there.
Kelly went to court for the first time on Wednesday afternoon.
A lawyer from the office of the Maricopa County Attorney said Kelly was “getting ready to commit an act of mass casualty.” The Republic got a copy of a court document that said Kelly’s actions showed a pattern of his suspected terrorist behavior getting worse over time.
Jason Squires, Kelly’s lawyer, wouldn’t say anything to USA TODAY on Wednesday afternoon.
What took place?
People were after the Tempe office because it was where Democrats did campaign work. The building was hit by shots from guns and BB guns. The three killings happened late at night when no one was at work. No one was hurt in any of them.
Early on Oct. 6, there was another shooting at the Democrats’ field office. The other two shootings happened in September, almost a week apart. The first one happened on September 16 and the second one on September 23. All of the events took place between midnight and one a.m. in the area.
The Arizona Republic was told by police that bullet holes were found in the front door and a window glass. The Arizona Democratic Party closed its field office in Tempe for good and moved to a place that they haven’t said.
