CHICAGO — Documents show that the man who was shot and killed outside of a North Side Chicago Transit Authority train stop on Sunday night was out on bond pending his trial for an armed robbery involving the CTA earlier this year.
Died at a hospital in the area hours before he was supposed to go to court for a status hearing. He was 27 years old. Robie, who had been convicted of a felony, was waiting to go to court after being charged with an attack and theft at the Granville CTA station in January.
Chicago police say Robie was outside the station on the 1300 block of West Morse Avenue on Sunday night around 8:30 p.m. when shots were fired from a black SUV. Police say Robie was shot once in the lower back. His condition was very bad when he was taken to a nearby hospital, but he was later declared dead.
Several people told WGN that they knew the victim and that they often hung out in the area.
The reason for the shooting is still unknown, and as of Monday evening, no one was arrested. Also, the police haven’t given any information about the suspect or suspects.
WGN was told that a fake gun was found on the victim at the scene of the crime, but it doesn’t look like the victim was involved in the killing.
Investigators stayed at the spot for several hours, searching the area and making notes about evidence like shell casings. The Morse Red Line station was hit by gunfire, and at least three bullet holes can be seen in the windows of the station lobby, which is only a few feet from the turnstiles and the area where CTA workers sit.
For a short time, train service was halted, but it is now back to normal.
“Very close”
Witnesses told WGN that live music and an outdoor event was going on near the scene of the crime.
Someone who only wanted to be known as “DW” says he saw the victim after hearing what he thought were more than a dozen shots. Were you there? People also ran for cover, he said.
“Everyone was just stunned,” “DW” said. There’s a lot of noise like this in Rogers Park, but this was close. We were lucky that the bullets didn’t hit us.
“…there was an older woman here, and it looked like she knew the victim.” I just hugged her while she was crying. “It’s sad.”
James Schweitzer, who has lived in the area for a long time, says he was also out and about at the time of the killing, playing pool at a bar nearby.
This quick rapid fire made it sound like more than one gun was firing, Schweitzer said.
Matt Schrock, who lives in the area, said it sounded like “pop-pop-pop,” but “you knew it wasn’t fireworks.”
“You worry about whether bullets will start going through or not.” Schrock said.
For the third time since the beginning of the year, someone has been shot and killed in this area.
Two men were shot outside in Rogers Park in the late morning hours of April 9. One of them, 33 years old, died from his injuries. Two people were charged with first-degree murder in May for that gun death.
Police say a 17-year-old boy was killed and a 14-year-old girl was hurt in a shooting in Gage Park.
A month earlier, on March 12, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed while standing on the corner of Glenwood and Greenview streets.
Schrock said, “I think that’s how everyone in the community feels.” “Everyone feels sad when someone else does.”
In 2017, an accidental bullet hit and killed 64-year-old teacher Cynthia Trevillion in Rogers Park. This may be one of the most tragic events that people in the area can still remember.
“That made me very upset,” Schweitzer remembered. “I think that was the first time someone was killed.”
WGN has also talked to Maria Hadden, who is the alderwoman for the 49th Ward and has previously voiced worry after other violent incidents in the area.
Anyone with knowledge about the shooting death on Sunday night can call detectives in Area Three.
