Authorities say that a teacher from Massachusetts and her 1-year-old child died after getting stuck in a house fire in New York.
A news report from the New York State Police says that crews were sent to the scene on Clinton Hollow Road in Clinton, N.Y., around 10:40 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13.
When firefighters got to the house, the person who called in the fire was outside. They said, “Two kids and their mother were inside the house on the second floor.”
But cops said that crews couldn’t get into the house until the Pleasant Valley Fire Department got there.
Police say that Shannon Hubbard, 35, of Brewster, and her two children, a boy who is 3 years old and a girl who is 1 year old, were finally pulled out of the burning building.
The 1-year-old and Shannon were taken to Vassar Hospital and Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, where they were later declared dead.
The Dennis Police Department says the baby is daughter Margaret “Maggie” Hubbard, who is Shannon’s.
Police said the boy, 3, and the guy, 39, were taken to Westchester Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police also found out that the survivors were patrolman John Hubbard and his son Jack.
Some information from Scott Carpenter, who is in charge of the Monomoy Regional School District, says Shannon taught preschool at Chatham Elementary School.
Carpenter said, “The death of Shannon will shock and hurt everyone at our school.” After the tragedy, counseling has been set up at the elementary schools in the school system.
“Shannon was a beloved member of our school community, a dedicated and involved teacher, and a truly kind person,” Carpenter said in a separate Instagram post. “Our hearts go out to her family, friends, coworkers, students, and everyone else who was lucky enough to know her.”
Through The Greg Hill Foundation, more than $90,000 has been made to help the Hubbard family since Shannon and Maggie’s deaths.
In a statement, Dennis Police Chief John Brady said that the department will be there for the Hubbard family through this “unimaginable loss.”
“This sad news breaks the hearts of everyone in the Dennis Police Department,” Brady said. “Patrolman Hubbard is a respected member of our team and the community. More importantly, he is a friend of ours.” We’re very sorry for what happened to him and his family.
NYSP says that a probe into the fire is still going on.
