Arlington to spray for West Nile virus near AT&T Stadium after positive trap test

Two mosquito traps in Arlington tested positive for West Nile virus, one of which will require targeted ground spraying, the city announced July 15.

The city will spray in a half-mile radius near AT&T Stadium starting at 9 p.m. July 15 to 5 a.m. July 16 to reduce the virus-infected mosquitoes in the area.

The trap that triggered the ground spraying contained more than 50 mosquitoes, a city official told the Arlington Report.

The two new positive trap tests bring Arlington’s total of positive tests to three since the beginning of the mosquito trapping season, according to

Tarrant County Public Health

.

To prevent the spread of the virus to humans from infected mosquitoes, a company contracted by the city will spray “an ultra-low volume application of water-based permethrin product” in the area to reduce the number of insects.

The city said that ground spraying is usually done after a trap tests positive for either West Nile or St. Louis Encephalitis virus for three weeks straight.

The city may instruct its contractor to spray after one or two weeks of positive tests under certain circumstances. They include:

  • An abundance of virus-positive mosquitoes in a trap, or a positive test result from a trap with more than 50 mosquitoes.
  • Proximity to a recent human West Nile virus case.
  • Scheduled outdoor events near the trap’s area,
  • A high West Nile virus infection rate in the collected sample.

How to stay safe from West Nile virus and help prevent it

Tarrant County Public Health encourages citizens to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes by using insect repellents and wearing long-sleeved clothing. Dumping standing water and trimming vegetation is also recommended to discourage breeding.
