The storm that is impacting the South Shore was described by some meteorologists as a historic one in 200 weather event on Thursday due to the torrential downpour that was occurring in the Boston area.
The metro area’s wettest areas are listed below.
The National Weather Service noted that the storm that struck Boston, Quincy, Brockton, and other South Shore communities—which were under a flood watch in the morning—was particularly severe. A flash flood warning that lasted throughout the afternoon was also issued by NWS for Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, and portions of Connecticut.
Rain affected some I-93 lanes in Milton, Canton, and Quincy, causing flooding that affected workers and commuters throughout the state.
Tucker Antico, a meteorologist with Boston News 25, said several measurements put the rainfall along the Hingham-Weymouth boundary at about 6.5 inches. At such level, the storm is classified as a one in 200-year rainfall event.
According to Antico on X, to put things in perspective, that is barely one-third of the rainfall that caused the devastating flooding in Texas. More significantly, the threat is greatly increased by the topography in that region of the nation.

In keeping with the one in 200 event figure, WBZ Chief Meteorologist Eric Fisher said that there is a.5 percent probability of six inches of rain falling on portions of the South Shore in a given year.
The odds of 6″ of rain falling on this portion of the South Shore in a given year are about 1 in 200, or 0.5%.AzKSiKUCny’s #wbzpic.twitter.com
According to Terry Eliasen, another WBZ meteorologist, areas south of Boston received more than five inches of rain, North Hingham had more than six, and Weymouth received around 6.5 inches.
