Officials issue warning after rare venomous snake spotted in Attleboro

Residents in the city were warned by Attleboro officials on Wednesday that a rare venomous snake had been found nearby.

According to city officials, the snake, which is thought to be a copperhead, was spotted along Milk Street along the Ten Mile River. According to officials, two dogs were bitten by the snake.

According to officials, please use caution when running or walking in this area and keep your dogs near by.

Despite being distributed from southern New England to Illinois and south to Georgia, the copperhead is categorized as an endangered species in the Bay State by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. According to the state, they have typically only been discovered in the Boston region and the southern Connecticut River Valley.

According to a state wildlife official’s online post, the copperhead is one of the rarest and most enigmatic snakes in Massachusetts. In Massachusetts, very few people will ever come across a copperhead by chance.

On a tan or beige background, Massachusetts copperheads feature triangular, reddish-brown heads with reddish crossbands. Additionally, the vipers’ pupils are vertical or cat-like.

State officials claim that although copperheads rarely act aggressively toward humans, they are capable of swift movement, fast tail vibration, and repeated strikes if they feel threatened.

According to experts, the majority of copperhead bites happen when people unintentionally step on or touch one. Bites need to be treated right away. Although they can harm tissue and produce discomfort, they are not lethal.

State wildlife officials advise people not to handle or disturb copperheads and to keep a safe distance from them if they are sighted.

Residents who have any questions or concerns are encouraged to call the city’s health department at 508-223-2222, extension 3241, according to Attleboro officials.
