Brayan Bello is living up to his potential as a top-of-the-rotation starter for the Red Sox after a few years in the major leagues. Actually, he may be pitching more effectively than that.
Bello helped the Red Sox defeat the Yankees 1-0 on Friday by pitching seven scoreless innings. He didn’t let a runner get into scoring position all night long, giving up just three hits and one walk while striking the Yankees out five times.
Bello’s season record now stands at 10-6 after the victory. Additionally, he improved his ERA to 3.07 for the season, which ranked him tenth in the American League.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora expressed his admiration for Bello, a 26-year-old righty, as games like Fridays have gradually become the norm for him lately.
He took a backseat. Although he was able to gain some muscle, he wasn’t prepared for spring training. Cora informed reporters that although he threw the ball correctly, he was inefficient. He improved. It feels like [Garrett] Crochet every five days now. We’ll be alright; it’s Brayan’s night.
Given that the left-hander has possibly been among the top three pitchers in MLB this season, Crochet has undoubtedly had a better season than Bello. However, Bello has recently outperformed the Red Sox ace in a few areas. Let’s now examine some statistics that demonstrate how successfully Bello has overcome his hot streak.
2.75: Since June 1, Bello’s ERA has been 2.75, the 10th-best in all of baseball.
12: Bello has been a dependable arm for the Red Sox in terms of workload because he hasn’t allowed many runs lately. When the two are combined, Bello has had 12 solid starts since the beginning of June, pitching at least six innings and giving up three or fewer earned runs.
2: In addition to the previous point, Bello has made 14 starts in which he has pitched at least six innings or more, with the exception of two. Bello pitched less than five innings in each of his four starts before this run.
95: Bello has been on the bump for 95 innings since June 1, which further increases the total number of innings he has thrown. He just lags behind Phillies standout Christopher Sanchez in that and quality starts, making it the second-best record in MLB during that time.
15: Bello hasn’t dominated opponents by forcing them to strikeout, in contrast to Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet. Since June 1, he has only recorded a strikeout rate of 6.92 per nine innings pitched. But since the beginning of June, his groundball percentage of 47.8 has been the 15th-best in MLB.
4: Barrel percentage is another statistic that shows how successful Bello has been at creating gentle contact. Since June 1, the Red Sox pitcher has had the fourth-best barrel percentage in baseball, with opposing batters recording a 5.4 barrel % off Bello. Since the beginning of June, Bello has also had the 16th-best hard hit percentage against (37.3).
51: Bello pitched seven innings of shutout ball at Yankee Stadium on Friday, his second appearance this season. According to J.P. Long, he became the first Red Sox pitcher to accomplish that since Luis Tiant did so in 1974, which was 51 years ago.
1.95: Although this is a career statistic, Bello has always felt completely at home at Yankee Stadium. According to J.P. Long, his 1.95 career ERA in the Bronx is the highest of any pitcher during the Live Ball era (minimum of 10 starts).
3: Bello has recently had a good ERA when playing teams with winning records. Since June 1, he has a 3.00 ERA when facing winning clubs.
