New York City, NY — A tragic incident unfolded early Monday morning in Hudson Heights, Manhattan, when Lev Vayner, 80, was fatally stabbed by a roommate he had taken in just days earlier. Alon Riabichev, 45, was arrested at the scene and now faces murder and criminal possession of a weapon charges.
Fatal Stabbing in Manhattan Apartment
The stabbing occurred around 3:15 a.m. at Vayner’s first-floor apartment at 37 Overlook Terrace. Authorities confirmed that Vayner sustained multiple stab wounds to the abdomen and neck, resulting in his death inside his home.
Residents described Vayner as selfless and generous, someone who often helped others. Juanita Abreu, a neighbor, said:
“It’s terrible. He was very generous and he tried to help.”
Roommate’s Background
The suspected killer, Alon Riabichev, had only been living with Vayner for about a week after being evicted by his mother. Sources said Riabichev had a history of reckless behavior, including alcohol and possible drug use, which contributed to his eviction.
Neighbors noted that Vayner had taken pity on Riabichev, providing him shelter despite his troubled past. One resident shared:
“He was on the street with nowhere to go, and Mr. Vayner took pity. He tried to help.”
Riabichev has reportedly been arrested at least seven times for theft of services in the past. Following the fatal encounter, he called 911, and police found a knife at the scene.
Dispute Led to Deadly Encounter

Police and sources confirmed that an argument between Vayner and Riabichev preceded the stabbing, though the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear. Another resident living above the victim said: “All I heard was the police knocking on my door at 3 a.m.”
Authorities swiftly arrested Riabichev in the building shortly after the incident. He now faces murder charges in connection with the deadly altercation.
Community Reaction
Neighbors expressed shock over the fatal event, noting a change in the character of the neighborhood. Juanita Abreu added:
“I don’t have any explanation… Now I see homeless people on the street all the time. Smoking, drinking in the street.”
Residents are still grappling with the tragedy, mourning Vayner’s generosity and the violent circumstances surrounding his death.
