by Patchogue, NY – An 8-year-old boy was reunited Friday with the three Suffolk County Police officers who saved his life after he fell through a frozen pond outside his apartment complex on Christmas Day. The heroic rescue highlighted the bravery and dedication of local law enforcement during the holiday season.
Child Trapped in Freezing Water
The third-grader, Tayvion, was playing near his Patchogue home when he attempted to cross a partially frozen pond as a shortcut back to his apartment. The ice gave way beneath him, leaving the boy clinging to the melting surface for his life.
“Thank you,” Tayvion said with a smile as he hugged Officers Andrew Tirelli, James Rizzo, and Michael Santillo, who were all honored for their courageous actions.
911 was called just after 1 p.m., prompting a swift response from Suffolk County Police. A crowd had gathered as Tayvion screamed for help in the freezing water, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Heroic Rescue Efforts
Officers Tirelli and Rizzo first attempted to reach the boy using a life preserver and rope, but Tayvion struggled to hold on long enough to be pulled to safety.
Realizing the danger, Sgt. Michael Santillo took decisive action. He bear-crawled across the cracking ice toward the boy, determined to save him. The ice eventually gave way beneath him as well, but Santillo’s height allowed him to stand in the pond and carry Tayvion to safety with his bare hands.
The boy’s quick rescue prevented what could have been a tragedy on Christmas Day, and the officers were recognized for their life-saving efforts at a ceremony Friday.

At the ceremony, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina praised the officers for their commitment and courage:
“While many were home enjoying Christmas, our officers were away from theirs, on patrol, ensuring the safety of residents.”
The event celebrated Tayvion’s safe recovery and acknowledged the extraordinary teamwork and bravery of Tirelli, Rizzo, and Santillo. The child’s family, who requested his last name not be used, expressed profound gratitude for the officers’ heroic actions.
