Steele, MO – Early Sunday morning, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 hit two kilometers east of Steele, Missouri. It woke people up and shook homes. When it happened, at 3:44 a.m. CST, the quake was 10.5 kilometers deep and could be felt in parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says that many people reported the quake, with many saying that it was short but strong. Over 500 reports have been made so far, and the “Did You Feel It?” map shows reports from all over the place, all the way to Memphis, Tennessee.
Midwest earthquakes don’t happen very often, but Missouri is in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which is known for having a lot of earthquakes. Even though it wasn’t very big, the event showed how seismically active the area is. Authorities in the area said that there was no instant damage or injuries, but people were worried about more tremors.
Aftershocks are still being watched for by experts in the area. People can stay safe by checking for information from the USGS and their local emergency services.
