“I’ve been taking computer science outside of school for a couple of years, it’s a special program that my parents enrolled me in. It’s on the level of if you were to take AP computer science at school. It’s what I plan to do with my life, definitely go into computer science and it has prepared me really well. Unfortunately in my class for the past two years I was the only girl and I have spoken to many teachers about this issue. There are more programs right now that try to involve girls in computer science but they are at a much lower levels which is frustrating to me. When you go into higher levels, it is all boys. There are nice boys who are supportive but there are a lot of them who think that just because you are a girl you don’t know as much and they are sometimes very condescending. So if you’re going to go into computer science be prepared for it. You have to, for example, when somebody tells you, ‘oh let this guy do it’ or a guy tells you ‘oh let me help you with that’, you have to be ok with that and say, ‘no I’m fine’ and do it yourself, but you will encounter that a lot.”
