22-Year-Old Woman Dies in Hospital Following Overnight Crash, South Carolina Coroner Confirms

GROTON, Conn. — Police in Groton say a 21-year-old man died in a motorbike accident early Friday morning.

Around 12:45 a.m., a police officer found the scene of the accident near Midway Pizza on Fort Hill Road, which is between Depot Road and South Road.

Police say the motorcycle was lying on the road, and the driver was found nearby with major injuries.

The 21-year-old Groton man Elijah W. Hummel was taken to L&M Hospital and declared dead there.

According to the police, Hummel was going too fast west on Fort Hill Road/Route 1 on a 2024 Kawasaki ZX-400 when he lost control of the bike and went across the eastbound lane, hitting a parked Jeep Cherokee that was empty in front of the pizza shop.

The investigation was helped by the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit, the police in Groton and Ledyard, and the criminal investigation division in Groton.
