Longwood, FL — A 20-year-old man is among the first to be arrested under Florida’s newly enacted “Super Speeder” law after troopers caught him racing down Interstate 4 at 135 miles per hour — more than twice the posted speed limit.
According to a statement from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Ian Rivera-Marrero was observed “aggressively weaving through traffic” near Longwood, where the speed limit is 60 mph. Troopers said the reckless behavior posed a serious threat to other drivers on the busy highway.
Upon stopping the vehicle, officers found a loaded handgun inside, with one round chambered. Rivera-Marrero was taken into custody and now faces charges under Florida’s Super Speeder law, which took effect on July 1.
The new legislation, known as HB 351, makes it a criminal offense to:
- Exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more
- Drive at 100 mph or higher in a way that endangers people or property
While Florida has long enforced reckless driving laws, the courts have historically ruled that extreme speeding alone wasn’t enough to justify such charges. The new law directly targets excessive and dangerous speeding behaviors, even when not accompanied by other reckless actions.
Rivera-Marrero’s arrest follows a similar case reported just days earlier in Altamonte Springs, where another 20-year-old was caught speeding at 155 mph.
“Risking your life or someone else’s is never worth it,” FHP said in their release, warning drivers to take the new law seriously as enforcement ramps up across the state.
