2 Mass. women killed in camper explosion in Maine’s Old Orchard Beach

A camper exploded at an Old Orchard Beach campsite in Maine, killing two women from Massachusetts.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Powder Horn Campground, and the victims, Alesia Ventura-Large, 58, of Marlborough, and Nancy Pilsch, 58, of Leominster, were severely burned, according to the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office. After being transported to Portland’s Maine Medical Center, the women passed away on Sunday from their wounds.

Although the investigation is still ongoing, officials said preliminary results show that LP gas has been seeping into and under the park model camper. The explosion is thought to have been caused by the gas igniting when one of the women lit a candle.

Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
